AI Tools Usage Policy
Journal of Integrative International Relations acknowledges the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly Generative AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, and similar applications, in academic writing. While these tools may assist authors during the writing process, their use must be responsible, transparent, and consistent with the principles of academic integrity, intellectual independence, and ethical authorship.
Disclosure Requirement:
Authors are required to disclose any use of Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in the preparation of their manuscripts. A disclosure statement must be included in a dedicated section titled “Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process” and placed before the references section at the time of submission. This statement will also appear in the final published article.
Permitted Use:
Generative AI tools may only be used to improve language quality, clarity, readability, or grammar. They must not be used to generate core arguments, theoretical frameworks, data analysis, interpretations, or conclusions, all of which remain the sole responsibility of the author(s).
Author Responsibility:
Authors must carefully review, edit, and verify any content produced with AI assistance. Full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript rests entirely with the author(s).
AI Cannot Be Listed as an Author:
AI tools or AI-assisted technologies must not be listed as authors or co-authors, as authorship requires human intellectual contribution, responsibility, and accountability.
Sample Disclosure Statement:
Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process
“During the preparation of this article, the author(s) used [name of tool/service] to assist with [e.g., grammar correction or sentence restructuring]. The author(s) have reviewed and edited the content and take full responsibility for the final version of the manuscript.”
This declaration is not required for the use of basic tools such as spell-checkers, grammar checkers, or reference management software (e.g., Mendeley, Zotero). If no Generative AI tools were used, no disclosure statement is necessary.
Use of AI in the Editorial and Peer Review Process:
To ensure confidentiality, fairness, and the integrity of the review process, JIIR prohibits editors and reviewers from using Generative AI or AI-assisted tools during manuscript evaluation. All editorial and peer-review decisions must be made solely by human reviewers.
Policy Review:
This policy will be periodically reviewed and updated in response to developments in AI technologies and evolving international standards in scholarly publishing.
Journal of Integrative International Relations is committed to fostering ethical, transparent, and responsible academic publishing practices that uphold scholarly rigor and integrity in the field of international relations.
