The Sociology of Islam (JSI) recognizes the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, particularly Generative AI (GenAI) tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, and similar AI-assisted technologies in academic writing and research activities. While these technologies may support authors during the writing and editing process, their use must remain responsible, transparent, ethical, and consistent with the principles of academic integrity, scholarly independence, and responsible scientific communication.

JSI is committed to maintaining high standards of originality, critical scholarship, and ethical publishing practices in the fields of sociology, Islamic studies, humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences.

  1. Disclosure Requirement

Authors are required to disclose any use of Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies in the preparation of their manuscripts.

A disclosure statement must be included in a dedicated section entitled:

“Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process”

This section must be placed before the references section at the time of initial submission. The disclosure statement will also appear in the final published version of the article when applicable.

Transparency regarding AI use is essential to maintain trust, accountability, and ethical standards in scholarly publishing.

  1. Permitted Use of Generative AI

Generative AI tools may only be used for limited technical assistance purposes, including:

  • Improving grammar, spelling, punctuation, and language quality
  • Enhancing readability and sentence structure
  • Assisting with formatting or language refinement

Generative AI tools must not be used to:

  • Generate original scholarly arguments or theoretical frameworks
  • Produce sociological, political, cultural, or religious analysis
  • Interpret research findings or formulate conclusions
  • Replace critical thinking, intellectual contribution, or academic judgment of the author(s)

All intellectual, analytical, and scholarly contributions must remain entirely the responsibility of the human author(s).

  1. Author Responsibility

Any content produced with the assistance of AI technologies must be carefully reviewed, verified, edited, and validated by the author(s) prior to submission.

Authors retain full responsibility for:

  • The accuracy and validity of all information
  • The originality and authenticity of the manuscript
  • Proper citation and avoidance of plagiarism
  • Ethical compliance and scholarly integrity
  • The final published version of the article

The use of AI tools does not reduce or transfer author accountability in any form.

  1. AI Cannot Be Listed as Author

Generative AI tools or AI-assisted technologies must not be listed, credited, or acknowledged as authors or co-authors of manuscripts submitted to JSI.

Authorship requires:

  • Human intellectual contribution
  • Accountability for the research
  • The ability to approve the final manuscript
  • Responsibility for responding to ethical concerns and scholarly critiques

As AI systems cannot fulfill these responsibilities, they are not eligible for authorship under any circumstances.

  1. Sample Disclosure Statement

Section Title:

Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process

Example Statement:

During the preparation of this article, the author(s) used [name of tool/service] to assist with [e.g., grammar correction, language editing, sentence restructuring]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) carefully reviewed, edited, and validated all content and take full responsibility for the final version of the manuscript.

No disclosure is required for the use of basic tools such as:

  • Standard spell-checkers
  • Grammar correction software
  • Reference management software (e.g., Mendeley, Zotero, EndNote)

If no Generative AI or AI-assisted technologies were used during manuscript preparation, no declaration statement is necessary.

  1. Use of AI in the Editorial and Peer Review Process

To preserve the confidentiality, fairness, integrity, and independence of the editorial and peer review process, JSI strictly prohibits editors and reviewers from uploading manuscripts, reviewer comments, or confidential editorial materials into Generative AI platforms or AI-assisted systems.

Editors and reviewers must not use Generative AI tools to:

  • Evaluate manuscripts
  • Generate peer review reports
  • Produce editorial decisions
  • Analyze confidential submission materials

All editorial assessments, peer review evaluations, critiques, and publication decisions must be conducted solely through human academic judgment and professional expertise.

  1. Ethical Concerns and Misuse

JSI reserves the right to investigate suspected misuse of AI technologies in submitted manuscripts, including but not limited to:

  • Undisclosed AI-generated content
  • Fabricated references or false citations
  • AI-generated plagiarism
  • Manipulated or misleading research content
  • Ethical violations involving automated content production

Violations of this policy may result in:

  • Manuscript rejection
  • Retraction of published articles
  • Notification to affiliated institutions
  • Other corrective actions in accordance with publication ethics standards and COPE guidelines
  1. Periodic Review of the Policy

This policy will be periodically reviewed and updated to reflect:

  • Technological developments in Artificial Intelligence
  • Evolving international ethical standards
  • Best practices in scholarly publishing and research integrity

JSI remains committed to adapting responsibly to emerging technologies while preserving the values of critical scholarship, academic honesty, and ethical research practice.
